My Social Graph and Social Index

So I have several spurts in trying to understand, track, and ultimately evolve my social graph and my social index.

For anyone not following these areas of study, here are some definitions:

Social Graph Definition: Social Graph is the network of connections that exist through which people communicate and share information.

Social Index Definition - Social Index is a measurement of the value, size and velocity of a social graph.

I have tried several ways to track my social graph and social index, and recently there has been several tools released to assist. Such as Google Social Graph API, MyBlogLog, Plaxo, FriendFeed, and Disqus.

I'm sure there are more that I am forgetting about. These tools all provide some missing link in tracking my social graph and its value. I'm still trying to pull it all together, but unfortunately it is becoming like managing my social networks, I 'm developing fatigue.

Defining my social graph fatigue! It is getting clearer than ever before, but I still need to squint to see anything even slightly clear.

More to come on this...

A Little Closer to a Single Social Interface

A new startup called PageOnce makes an attempt to create a single social interface. This doesn't appear to be too much different than Netvibes or Pageflakes. However since it is in private BETA I can't really take it for a test drive.

Definitely a common problem for social networking and other web application fatigue when you have to go to each site and maintain.

I try to keep up on all my applications and networks, however fall way short when I just get tired of doing it.

We'll see if PageOnce can achieve my single social interface.

Definition of My Social Graph

I keep talking about what my single social interface, which I have been wrestling with as part of my social graph. Figured I better clarify for some of you what the social graph is?

A social graph consists of who an individual is connected to based on the type of connections, such as work, friendship, interests, and location.

I am still grasping the definition of my social graph as I participate more and more on social networks and in the social media space.

In my single social interface definition I try to define communication with my social graph in another perspective based upon Individuals, Network, and Public.

That could be a mix of many different people across my social graph.

I am also still fumbling with how all my content and information fits into this picture and where does it show on my social graph as I create, share and collaborate within my social graph?

It is great to see different people perspectives on the social graph how they work to define it as well.

Pownce the New Sharing Application

I went ahead and signed up for Pownce tonight, they were coming out of private BETA tonight right at midnight. So who can refuse such a trendy launch....

I also got a glimpse of their site as they were making changes I assume and it was minus the CSS style sheet. I cleared my cache and reloaded to see if it came around but it didn't. They have a really nice looking site.

For those of you who don't know Pownce is a application where you can send music, photos, messages, links, events, and more. You can do it all on our web site, or install a lightweight desktop software that lets you get out of the browser.

It is a pretty interesting little application that allows you to import your contacts from your major networks using Plaxo it looks like.

I like how they describe how Pownce is made, check it out.

They have an API as well that lets you access the user information, friends, and notes for the account.

Still wrapping my head around how this fits into your daily activity, but I am sure it will come to me. Looks like it is another piece of the puzzle in helping me get control of my social graph and further complete my single social interface.

Will share information about it as it comes out.

Yahoo Life and a Single Social Interface

Reading several posts on Yahoo's CES announcement about Yahoo Life! at Mashable - Will Yahoo Life! Revolutionize the Way We Use E-Mail?, and Read/Write/Web - Yahoo! Life! and Go 3.0 Announced at CES - is Yahoo! Back in '08?, and ZDNet - Jerry Yang offers sneak peak of Yahoo’s future: Life!.

Looks like Yahoo is inching closer to have a version of my Single Social Interface that gives me a one stop place to manage my social Internet.

I really think they are onto the next generation of Social Internet Adoption. The next wave of users have embraced and adopted Internet and Email. They don't fully understand social networks and need a simple interface to interact with the social world.

I enjoy Google and their platform for doing this, however it is something I have to assemble and build from all the Google parts, it doesn't have a single interface ready to go with a pretty name like Yahoo Life!

Nice work Yahoo.....

Usage of My Public Profile Information

Since everything with my public profile is accessible to the general public in some form, there should be a easy profile page get at my bio and display links to all my public information.

You should be able to see my photos, videos, comments, social networks, etc.

Of course the ones I want you to see.

You should be able to review my resume and work / project history. You should know if I am looking for work or not.

All of this without really speaking to me. However, you should be able to interact with me as well.

People should be able to come get my information from me.

If I am selling products or offering services you should see that. Come harvest my public events. Come gather demographics on me.

If you like a video I have you can license it right there and utilize it.

Social Networking Profile Aggregation

I have seen a lot of discussion about the use of multiple social networks and how difficult it is to maintain your profile across these networks.

I don't want a different profile at each of these networks. I want my one profile and these networks to come to me.

I don't want to have go through a lengthy sign up process. I want to be instantly evaluated upon arrival and either let in.....or what?

Every application should treat me like this. I don't have to fill out a form and check my email to validate an email before entering a retail store or restaurant on the street.

I am authenticated at the door for the public environment or there is a simple ID or visual check to make sure I am a valid user.
